12-21-12

In a few weeks, the world will end. Looking for a front row seat, best start planning your trip to Mexico! Have we captured your attention?? As December 21st, 2012 quickly approaches, many people, including Mexicans in the heart of the Mayan territory are preparing big parties to celebrate the “end of the world”.

According to the ancient Mayan calendar, December 21st, 2012 signifies the world ending referenced on a 1,300 year old stone tablet. Many believe that the tablet only indicates the end of a cycle in the Mayan calendar, not the end of the world. Either way, the Mayan territory planned numerous commemorative events that drew in millions of visitors over the year. According to President Felipe Calderon, the “Year of the Maya will attract 52 million tourists to southeastern Mexico who will spend approximately $23 million”. There have been 500 Mayan-themed events throughout the year in Southern Mexico leading up to this all important day! Some of the events included:

– Burning of incense, chanting and offering prayers by Mayan priests at the archaeological site of Izapa

– Between the resorts of Cancun & Playa del Carmen, tourists added messages and photos in a time capsule that was buried for and not to be seen again for 50 years

– Dance & Music Festivals

Should a cataclysmic event not occur, tourists who have been to Mexico over the past year and attended the events can at least take away a new cultural experience and knowledge of the Mayan history.
