Mad Men stars Elizabeth Moss & Christina Hendricks Wed

We are huge followers of Mad Men, and it’s now been a month of 2 celebrity mad women weddings. Just a few weeks after the gorgeous Christina Hendricks exchanged vows with actor Geoffrey Arend in mid-October, Elizabeth Moss — who portrays the hard working Peggy Olson, on the hit series– said “I do” to Fred Armisen from Saturday Night Live. It was a small and private ceremony held at The Foundry, in Long Island City, New York on October 25, 2009. The bride walked down the aisle in a creation by designer Claire Pettibone.

Hendricks wore a gown by Carolina Herrera and her wedding took place on October 11 at Il Buco restaurant in New York City.

Congratulations to both gorgeous couples!

The Riviera Maya – Destination Wedding hotspot

Call it the destination du jour: the Riviera Maya really is a hot spot for weddings. Despite much of the flack Mexico has seen in the past few months (from the H1N1 spread to more), this area has grown in leaps and bounds with a number of luxury brand hotels popping up on this stretch of lovely Caribbean coastline. What started as an offshoot of the popular Cancun strip has turned into a sophisticated locale filled with options for every budget. From high-end boutique villas once owned by royalty to chic eco-shacks on the beach—just sorting through the options can be a time-consuming and confusing task if you’re unfamiliar with the territory.

Playa del Carmen, roughly the centre of the action between Cancun and Tulum, is a thriving city with a not-too-distant past as a small fishing town and artist colony. I’ve had countless conversations with my father about Playa, which was once the place to catch a ferry to Cozumel. Wow—look how far it’s come! It was only a few years ago that I remember walking along 5th Avenue watching a Starbucks being built, and I woke the next morning to see it fully operational.

When it comes to DW planning, here’s why the Riviera Maya works: first, ease of travel. Flights to the Cancun airport are frequent and direct from most major cities in North America. Why not make it easy for your guests to get to your wedding? And this location is easy. Trust me, guests will sing your praises for picking a simple to get to destination! Secondly, hotel options. From large all-inclusive-style properties with 15 restaurants and mini Mayan architectural replicas on-site to four-bedroom boutique inns that shut off the power when the sun goes down (for all you eco-conscious couples), name your style and budget and there’s a good chance we can find you something you like!  (more…)

Save the Date Magnets

Mimmo+Naz

When it came to my own DW, I decided to make my own save-the-date magnets. I figured this would be a sure way to keep the event fresh in my guests’ minds and get them thinking about booking their tickets to my wedding.

To start, I asked a very creative graphic designer friend to help me create the layout. We talked about sticking with a beach/tropical theme, but staying away from something too cheesy or cartoonish. Also, I wanted to incorporate my love for things antique into the design, so he came up with a vintage palm tree motif. I loved it instantly! He laid out the design in a tiled format on a standard 8.5 x 11 paper size so I could print them from home.

If you’re thinking of making magnets, I totally suggest it, as it’s not a hard project, it just takes a bit of effort. Once you have the design in place, you will need to go shopping for supplies! I purchased magnet paper (I literally bought a huge sheet off of a roll of magnetic paper) from an art store. I also bought some gorgeous cream coloured linen paper to print the designs. The cream colour really accented the olive green palm tree hues, and somehow enhanced the vintage feel I was aiming for. With paper in hand, I ran it through my HP home printer and had the project off to a great start. (more…)

Barefoot or Heels?

Emerich_01_129(sm)One of the biggest destination wedding debates is whether or not to wear shoes. Are you a barefoot or heels gal? Most ladies I know like shoes a lot, and your wedding is a great time to splurge on a fabulous pair. However, stilettos are not realistic for the beach and traditionally, a barefoot ceremony goes hand in hand with a destination wedding.

Speaking for the ladies, sand and heels don’t mix. Anyone who’s ever walked in the sand in their heels can tell you it’s a yucky feeling when the sand granules get stuck in your shoe. And in hot climates, when your feet might be sweating, the sand sticks to your feet like glue!

This goes beyond the beach, as well—garden ceremonies on the grass are also not heel-friendly. I can think back to a cocktail reception I once attended where it rained the previous night and my heels kept getting stuck in the lawn. I couldn’t move around, so I ended up carrying my heels in one hand and a glass of champagne in the other! (more…)

Your Destination Wedding Guest list

August 02, 2008_173135_AprilJJweddingweek_0162The majority of destination weddings will have a slimmer guest list than a hometown fete. And that statement is usually interpreted in a positive light by brides and grooms, as part of the allure of the Destination Wedding is being wed in an intimate setting with only a small number of your nearest and dearest in attendance. However, what happens when some of those important people can’t come?

In a perfect world, your plans work flawlessly for everyone, but life isn’t always exact. Sometimes a sibling, cousin or best friend just can’t make it. Maybe it’s work, maybe it’s money, maybe they are having a baby… the list of “maybes” goes on. In all cases, these people wish they could be there and would do anything to be part of the event, but it’s just not always possible. Heck, it happened to me personally, so I really understand.

How does one cope with this stress? Should you cancel the wedding all together? Change the date? Well no, those options are not realistic, but it can be a hard pill to swallow. The show must go on without a key player.

My advice is to take the news like a champion and understand that life sometimes gets in the way of plans. You have to understand that people’s priorities are well intentioned, and then move on. Don’t be mad, even though it’s hard not to be. You’re not going to lose a friend or family member over this, so graciously let them know that you understand (even if you don’t at the time), and try and figure out a way to celebrate your wedding with this person in another way. That’s what I did…

The Caves

One of my favourite hotels in the world is The Caves in Negril, Jamaica. It’s a perfect place for an all-property buyout (think: total privacy and a resort all to yourself!) and a romantic, unique wedding choice for couples seeking something a bit different than the norm. The Caves is part of the Island Outpost family of hotels and it’s charming, quirky and the farthest thing from mass market.

Perched up on the cliffs of Negril, just past famous Seven Mile Beach, this property is small and intimate. Potential clients always ask the same question: “Will I miss the beach?” as this property isn’t directly on a sandy beach. Without hesitation, I always say not at all. There are so many nooks and crannies that lead you down to the ocean via stone stairs, and the sea is like a big, bright blue swimming pool. Pool ladders are attached to the rocks for easy access to dip in the ocean, and if you have the guts, take the plunge and dive off the cliff. I’m a big suck, and didn’t do it (maybe afraid of heights), but if you ever get the chance, go for it!!

For your wedding location, the ocean backdrop is a perfect for both your ceremony and reception. Get more information and photos about The Caves.

Celebrate Romance

panel

Last week I had the pleasure of speaking on a panel at the Destination Weddings and Honeymoons Magazine “Celebrate Romance” event, which was held at the timeless Beverly Hills Hotel. Susan Moynihan, editor of the magazine, moderated the panel and I sat alongside Harmony Walton of The Bridal Bar, and Sasha Souza, of the famed Sasha Souza Events.
